Death Unchained

<== ( Continued from In Pursuit of the Lost )

The group trekked overland to the Vuchar River, where they made camp for the night. The next day, Axel transformed into a Griffon and lifted the group across the river. They trekked though a forest, and came to a road. Heading north, they reached the four mile marker and went east until they came across a ruined chapel surrounded by a 'forest' of impaled victims. Brother Dromar claimed this is where they were supposed to meet his contacts, a band of elves.

Ruined Chapel
Investigating the ruined chapel, the group found a smoldering campfire surrounded by six people sleeping. As they approached to investigate, there was a foul air burning in one of the overturned braziers. Dromar dropped to the ground asleep - assassins, led by one of Vlad Drakov's Talons, jumped in through the windows and attacked! Suprised, the group took heavy damage but managed to drive off the attackers. Father Lucius cornered the leader and once the assassins were driven away, the group managed to wrestle the Talon to the ground and tie him up. Aylward followed one of the assasins and killed him, the rest escaped into the night.

The party begun digging graves for the fallen, meanwhile Axel said he would track the assassins to see where they fled to. Axel followed the trail back to the road where it went north. He followed the trail and saw a figure approaching in the darkness on the road ahead. As he got closer, he could see the figure was clothed in robes covering much of its body. Confronting this person, Axel found out that the person was actually a woman with strange golden eyes and elven ears. She called herself Sefris, and explained that she was headed south. Axel thought it best to walk her back to the group, where they could question her.

Crawling out of shallow graves, the party met Axel who was accompanited by this strange woman. Dromar was busy dragging bodies into the graves, when Sefris recognized one of them! The body of Sefris's comrade collapsed in on itself as if it were hollow, as Dromar dragged it near the fresly dug graves. Screaming aloud, she approached the body and asked what had happened here.

The group were skeptical at first, but soon believed Sefris when she told them about her comrades. Sefris went on to explain that she was pursuing the Ebon Fold and was told to meet her friend at this location. After all the bodies were buried, and the graves blessed, the party made camp in the forest nearby.

Nachtfliegen Wald
Dark Woods
The next morning they held a trial for the Talon whom the party had caputred. The soldier denied everything to do with the assassins, and was certain that he was attacked by Lucius first. Aylward determined that he was telling the truth through magic, and questioned him further. The Talon explained that he was coming home after a long shift, and investigated a disturbance in an alley way - the next thing he knew he was trapped inside a small smokey-glass room. Then he was in the graveyard of abandoned church being attacked by Lucius. Aylward confirmed that all he said was true. The party decided to let the Talon go unharmed, so long as they could get the group past the gate guards. The Talon agreed, but said there would be hell to pay if the party broke the tenents of the Lord.

The Talon escorted the group through the gates, and explained that they were arms merchants (to which they had the appropriate papers). Walking through the filth ridden streets, the group witnessed all kinds of atrocities; public execution, disease, slavery of demihumans, to name a few. Sefris walked with purpose, leading the group towards the tower they had heard much about. Along the way they were ambushed by a group of assassins, who then fled shortly thereafter.

Meanwhile, back in Port-a-Lucine, in the early hours of the morning, Reg awoke in the Barl's Edge Merchant's Inn. Approaching to clean the chamber pots was a maid, but she screamed when she saw the blood on the floor. He held her in place with magic and ran out the front door. There in the street warriors in plate mail were putting up wanted posters with his face on it! He snuck down to the wharves, where he paid a homeless man to gather information for him. This proved to be useless, so at night he climbed the city wall, created a distraction, and snuck away into the night.

Reg crossed the River Vuchar and ended up in the dark woods of Falkovnia. He came upon a road, and began walking. Soon a patrol of four Soldiers dressed in black with closed helms and black plumes came riding on black horses towards him. Reg dove into the forest, but it was too late, they had already spotted him! The commander barked out commands in a strange language, dismounted and searched the forest accompanied by two of his cronies.

Making a wide circle Reg suprised the last man holding the three horses. Struggling with the man to grab a horse, Reg cut loose the reigns and began riding off down the road. He created darkness and dropped the rock it was targeted on behind him, but the soldier continued to pursue. Being just far enough ahead, Reg slowed the horse jumped off, and slapped the animal's flanks to sent it on it's way. Meanwhile, he dove into the nearby underbrush while the black rider crashed on by, soon followed by the other three.

That night, he slept under the moonlight. The next day he wandered back to the road, and followed it 'East'. After progressing very little that day, but seeing many patrols along that road, Reg resolved to enact the 'High Hunt' of Elistraee, to help him find his lost comrades. He slept for most of the day, knowing that his strength would be needed at night.

Lekar from a distance
Lekar, Falkovnia
Under the light of the slivered moon, Reg summoned the aid of his goddess. Stripping naked and carrying only a longsword, he followed the faint calling of his goddess Northwards through the forest... In the still darkness before dawn, he came to the edge of the forest on a ridge, overlooking the foreboding walls of Lekar, capitol city of Falkovnia.

His journey completed, Reg was sure that his friends were inside the city walls. How he was going to cross this seemingly inpenatrible barrier was unknown. Just then, a man dressed completely in black appeared beside him. "I have been following you since Port-a-Lucine" the stranger explained. The stranger told him he was a friend of Reg's companions, and knew that they were inside. He made Reg promise to help him if he got him into the city. Agreeing, the stranger went down to the city wall and showed Reg how to sneak past the guards. They snuck through the city and the stanger brought Reg to a hovel where they rested until noon.

Back in town, Axel questioned Brother Dromar why he attacked him during the recent fray. Dromar claimed that he didn't. Dromar claims to have been walking down the street and the next thing he knows he was standing in a tiny grey room. He tried punching the walls, but to no avail. All of a sudden, he was back in the street, and a dog was biting at his neck. Axel claimed that he tracked one of the assassins to a sewer grate nearby.

Radiant Tower
Radiant Tower
After all wounds were assessed, the party came to the Radiant Tower, a decrepit, crumbling building. There they were met by a small boy in his teens named Alexandru, who summoned the 'owner' of the tower. A man named Mircea, who had short curly hair and piercing green eyes greeted the group. He lives in this tower and runs an orphanage in the tower. He explained that he is hiding from the Talons who would kill him (or worse) if they were to find out he practiced magic.

Aside from all the children and teenagers, a man who looked like a vagabond introduced himself as Ragnarok. Mircea was shown one of the crystal daggers, and asked if he could identify it for them. Soon after introductions were done, there was another knock at the door... thinking it was the Talons, Mircea bid everyone hide and answered the door. After some parley in the entryway, Mircea came back with Reg and a new friend, dressed completely in black.

When they walked through the door, Aylward flew into a rage, accusing Reg of being a criminal. Another trial was put into place with Sefris being the judge, and Lucius and Aylward as the prosecutors. Reg defended himself. After all charges were laid, Sefris found Reg not guilty, much to the dismay of the prosecution.

Mircea was busy in his labratory studying the dagger, so the party sat down to a meal and discussed what was going on. They asked who the guy in black was, who introduced himself as Khystos, one of the surviving members of the now extinct Shadow Guild. He asked the party if they would help. He thinks that the Ebon Fold is using his old lair. He made the party promise not to divulge the location of his headquarters if he revealed it to them... In return for helping him regain his headquarters, he can offer knowledge and perhaps some money. Everyone made a vow to their gods that they would not divulge their locations... Those who were godless gave up a lock of thier hair, so that if their promise was broken they would be hunted and killed. Khystos told the party that the headquarters to the old Shadow Guild was beneath the Radiant Tower!

After their meal, everyone went to sleep. In the late hours of night, Aylward heard footsteps while he was making his rounds, and saw that it was Mircea. He headed down to the study where he opened a panel in the floor and dissapeared! Aylward went to wake the others, but when returning he heard Mircea approaching. Hiding, Aylward watched Mircea return to his bedroom.

A tunnel descends into darkness
Tunnel under the Tower
Once the party was awake, they investigated the hole in the floor, which led to a spiral tunnel under the tower. Tracks in the dust were easy to follow, but stopped some twenty feet down. Axel found a loose brick, behind which was found a book. Inside were the names of numerous people, including that of the party! Beside each name were detailed notes on each person. Sefris cast a spell to remove their names, and Axel penned new entries. Just then they heard a grating sound, and the approach of someone from down the tunnel. Hiding back in the study, the party waited, Reg listened to the floorboard. There were two people, the PCs waited until the people in hallway were gone.

The most of the group decided go to sleep in the lounge. In the morning, Reg and Khystos were missing. A note was found explaining that Khystos left to gather his scattered 'brothers'. The party investigated Reg's room, but found no sign of a struggle. Mircea returned the crystal dagger, and told the party what he was able to learn from it.

Mircea began teaching his students a lesson, Father Lucius sat in and listened. Meanwhile Axel went snooping about the tower. The rest of the group decided on what was to be done. When the lesson was finished, Father Lucius questioned Mircea about the Vistani, and his whereabouts last night. Lucius could only determine that Mircea was telling the truth and seemed innocent.

With no where else left to turn, the group entered the catacombs below the tower. Spiralling deeper, the rough hewn tunnel ended with three corpses chained to a wall. Axel approached to look for any secret passages, and then the manacles flew off the corpses and latched themselves to Axel's arms. The group tried dispelling the manacles, but to no avail. Another manacle snapped out and grabbed Lucius. Ragnarok created a anti-magic field and walked closer, allowing the trapped people to escape. Sefris noticed that the other corpse was still alive, and healed him. He introduced himself as 'blah'. Axel found a secret door, while Aylward destroyed the animated chains.

The party entered the 'Well of Bones', the catacombs beneath the tower. After exploring much of the old passageways, the party found where the assassins were hiding the Shadow Guild's library. They set an ambush and managed to capture an assasin. Questioning him under torture, he revealed where Ladislas, his master, would likely be.

Venturing to the bottom of the well of bones, the party managed to find a secret door to a chamber of evil. Inside, Ladislas the Necromancer and his priest of Murder were waiting for the party. Hellfire erupted, causing great confusion, assassins suprised them from the shadows, many of the group fell from the crystal blades. Sefris telported into the room. The dark priest snuffed out her lifeforce with a spell. The assasins blades found Axel, and then quickly Lucius. When the end looked nigh, Aylward called to the heavens for the aid of his god - and he was answered!

Aylward called to the heavens and Pelor answered!
A golden light filled the room.
A great golden light filled the room, but quickly faded. The fallen comrades opened their eyes, and re-joined the combat! Ladislas was suprised, and found Mateo's pick tearing him in half. The priest of Murder was similarily dispatched, meanwhile the assassins fled upwards from the scene.

The party focused their attention on the unholy altar of bones, atop which rested a large crystal skull. Focusing their divine powers, they managed to shatter the skull to oblivion. The captured souls escaped, and flew about the room before finally flying out.

The group decided to follow the assassins, but it seemed they were long gone. They managed to venture back to the surface, and went to question Mircea
